May 28-29, 2024: I organized a two-day BRI Conference 2024 entitled “From Silk Road to Super Highway: A Decade of the Belt and Road Initiative” for the Center for Global Asia at New York University Shanghai and presented my research on Sri Lanka and the BRI in the final panel on ‘Discourse Dynamics of the BRI.’

May 20, 2024: I was an invited speaker at the Observer Research Foundation’s “A Geopolitical Churning: Perspectives from the Indian Ocean” panel discussion.

During my comments, I reiterated the importance of national policies that prioritise Sri Lanka’s national interest, and the need to understand the details of negotiations that are not publicised. During a conversation on the Indian Ocean Zone of Peace (IOZOP), I underscored the importance of differentiating between facts and opinions, as there was a misrepresentation of facts. It is important that we analyse inter-state relations and actions by understanding the bigger picture and not in isolation.

January 21, 2023: In this episode, I interview Dr Ladhu Ram Choudhary about India’s perceptions of the Indo-Pacific. Dr Choudhary elaborates on India’s contemporary regional security architecture in the Indian Ocean and beyond. Offering a brilliant insight into India’s engagement in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and the Indo-Pacific, Dr Choudhary argues, that Indian strategic thinking is motivated by a geo-psychological approach, characterised by “the principles of peaceful coexistence and universal fellowship.”  This discussion highlights how India views QUAD, not in the limited sense of a security alliance but as a constructive platform that can shape narratives and policies to address emerging challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. Furthermore, the experts analyse India’s perceptions of Chinese engagement in the Indian Ocean island states and its implications for the IOR. You can listen to the podcast here.

Choudhary about the strategic objectives of China’s BRI, its implications on the evolving Indo-Pacific regional order, and responses by BRI partners. I explore the utility of BRI for smaller states in the region in context of the Sri Lankan economic crisis and discusses how China’s behavior during this crisis might have impacted regional perceptions of the BRI.
